5 things you should know if you're flying private for the first time

Most of us non-celebrities don't get the chance to fly private whenever we need to get around.

But there may come a time in the future when you'll be invited — by a business colleague or a friend — to take a flight on a private jet. This could be an intimidating experience for first-timers.

We chatted with Andrew Collins, CEO of on-demand jet membership company Sentient Jet, to get his advice for conquering this milestone with grace. Sentient's Jet Card offers 25 hours of flying time with a membership that ranges from $124,825 to $350,325, depending on the quality of the aircraft.

Here's what Collins recommends for your first private flight.

Don't be late.

"Without long security lines and airport delays, what can be a day-long affair when traveling commercially is often only a couple of hours when flying private," Collins said.

Still, that's no excuse for showing up right at departure time. Collins recommends arriving about 20 to 30 minutes before your flight is set to leave, especially if your host is waiting on you.

Pack light.

"Luggage capacity depends on the jet, but many private jets can have less cargo or baggage space than commercial planes," Collins said. "I typically recommend private jet passengers pack as lightly as possible, especially when you are invited to travel as a guest and might not know what your host is planning to bring."

Don't leave your ID at home.

You won't have to go through traditional airport security, but you will still need to have something to identify yourself, including a passport if you're traveling internationally.

"[Forgetting] this ... is something we see from time-to-time and it can cause a challenge for a first-time flyer or with a guest," Collins said.

And though unlike on commercial flights, you can bring water and other liquids onboard, federal regulations on hazardous materials do still apply.

Meet the private-jet startup backed by Jay Z and the Saudi royal family

Private jet JetSmarter

Private jets are expensive to charter, often costing thousands of pounds. Right now they're mainly used by the ultrarich to get around, but a growing number of apps are trying to reduce the cost.

One of the most prominent private-jet startups is JetSmarter, which uses a membership model and something called "empty legs" to reduce the cost of flying on a private jet.

Business Insider went to the private-jet terminal at Luton airport to meet the company.

Luton has a little-known section that's kept separate from the normal terminals. If you can afford to charter a private jet then you drive into the airport using a dedicated entrance, sit in a VIP lounge, and then drive your fancy car straight up to the jet and fly off to somewhere nice.

Paul Grusevich, JetSmarter's head of global expansion, sits in the corner of the private-jet lounge. He has an indistinct accent that you only get by living all over the world, and the sunglasses to match. We walk through the plush lounge and jump into a car that drives us to a small private jet that's available to JetSmarter customers.

JetSmarter works by buying up "empty legs" from private-jet operators. An empty leg is when a private jet returns from a trip to its home airport, or if it's repositioning to prepare to pick up more passengers. Those flights don't have any passengers — just the pilots and crew.

The company buys empty legs in bulk and offers them to paying members free. It says it gets a "vast" discount on the prices of empty legs but declined to give an approximate amount. Grusevich says it results in a "win-win" scenario for operators as they're able to make money from flights that were, well, empty.

People pay a yearly fee to join one of JetSmarter's three different membership tiers, and that gets them access to the private-jet booking system. The least expensive tier, "access," costs $4,000 (£3,000) a year and has a $2,000 (£1,500) joining fee. It grants you access (funnily enough) to JetSmarter's app, which lets customers book "empty leg" flights free.

Private jet lounge

The next tier up is "smart," which lets you book seats on jets chartered by JetSmarter that run regularly scheduled flights, and also lets you charter your own jet. That costs $10,000 (£7,500) per year with a $5,000 (£3,777) initiation fee.

And the most expensive tier is "sophisticated." It costs $40,000 (£30,200) a year with a $5,000 initiation fee but gives you $20,000 (£15,100) of flight credits. Sophisticated membership lets you make four outstanding reservations and you can book seats for other people, even if you're not on the flight.

JetSmarter doesn't make money from individual flights, Grusevich explains. Instead it's all about the membership fees. That helps the company overcome the low margins in the private-jet industry, which has seen several companies shut down. The New York Times reported earlier this year on the death of companies like Blackjet and Beacon, which aimed to make private-jet flights cheaper.

Grusevich, however, sees JetSmarter as very different to other companies that offer similar services. "I would argue that we do not have any direct competitors because there are services out there that only sell empty legs, there are services out there that only give shuttles, there are services out there that only give charters. There is no service that only gives all three," he argues. "Plus we also have a 24-hour concierge service through the app. It’s like a WhatsApp service."

When asked how many people actually use JetSmarter, Grusevich says that it transported a total of 20,000 people last year (which includes people who had seats booked for them by JetSmarter members) and it had 800,000 downloads and people registering through the app.

AirbusScroll through the app and you'll see a list of all the types of aircraft you can hire. There's everything from a helicopter to get you to the city (JetSmarter offers free chopper rides for some routes on Fridays) and an Airbus passenger plane.

Do people actually charter an entire Airbus through JetSmarter? Grusevich explains that yes, they do: "We sometimes have a CEO of a company become a member and he’s using it for himself. He likes the service so much that when he takes his company on a big outing somewhere, they get an Airbus."

JetSmarter doesn't make any extra money if you charter an Airbus through its app, as it pays the fees for chartering the flight. It's an expensive way of doing business, but the company has some impressive investors. Rapper Jay Z is a backer, as is the Saudi royal family and Twitter's director of product strategy Wayne Chang.

Grusevich says that 90% of the company's investors used the service before investing. And what's it like working with the Saudi royal family? He says they're very helpful: "We reach out to them more often that they reach out to us if we have a cultural question or we ask for a recommendation for a PR company to work with that they’re well acquainted with. That’s the level of involvement, and they’re happy to help."

As well as high-profile investors, JetSmarter has some well-known clients. Kim Kardashian tweeted about it to her millions of followers, which Grusevich says overloaded the company's servers for a while because of the interest it received. But the stunt backfired when it led to headlines like, "Kim Kardashian mocked after telling fans to download private jet app" and "The Kardashians slammed for not disclosing relationships to companies they hype on Instagram."

Celebrities aren't usually paid to promote JetSmarter, Grusevich says. Instead they're usually offered to try the service. That's all part of JetSmarter's strategy for appealing to people around the world who can afford to fly on private jets.

Before expanding to a new market, JetSmarter buys flight data and examines it to see which routes are popular. It also translates its app to the local language and looks at how many downloads it has had already.

The company then hosts and sponsors events that will cater toward people who can afford to join. But even then, JetSmarter is selective about who it wants to be seen using its service. "You have to be very careful. Just because someone is famous doesn’t mean they’re good for our product," Grusevich says.

Don't people hate having to share private jets with other people? It certainly doesn't seem very private, and the tiny jet I was sat in on the tarmac with Grusevich wasn't much more spacious than a normal town car. "It’s a country club in the sky. It’s people who can afford a membership that get to [join]. People actually like talking to each other and getting to know each other. They make friends. Some people — very few actually — in the United States they buy memberships just to network."

Despite its failed competitors, more companies are trying to compete with JetSmarter. There's Victor and Jetwise, and Uber regularly runs promotions for helicopter rides and trips on a private jet. What if it decides to introduce private jets as a service alongside cars? Grusevich says, "Bring it on!"

Skyranch

There's flying, and then there's flying.

Brazilian private-jet maker Embraer prefers that its customers experience the finer side of aviation. Earlier this year, the Sao Paulo-based company dazzled with its Kyoto Airship concept interior that featured a massive skylight installed on its flagship Lineage 1000E jets.

Now, Embraer has teamed up with Eddie Sotto, a designer based in Los Angeles, to create a custom interior called Skyranch One. Instead of the Kyoto Airship's Asian theme, Skyranch is a harmonious blend of several cultures.

"Think Dallas' JR Ewing meets the daughter of a Brazilian rancher," Jay Beever, Embraer's vice president of interior design, told Business Insider in an interview.

As a result, the Skyranch offers a Southwest theme with some Spanish and Portuguese flair, Beever said.

Here's a closer look at the Skyranch One interior concept:

SEE ALSO: I drove 2 cars that show how much things have changed since 2000

The Skyranch One interior is designed for Embraer's top-of-the-line Lineage 1000E executive jet. The 1000E has room for 13 to 19 passengers, with a range of nearly 5,300 miles.

Like the Kyoto Airship, the centerpiece of the Skyranch interior is a massive (by airplane standards) vertical "picture" window. Embraer strengthened the structure in the area around the window in a manner similar to that of an emergency exit door, Beever told Business Insider.

The interior is designed to "capture the solitude and privacy, the romance of the wide open spaces," Sotto wrote in a press release. "After all, aren't the skies the last frontier of privacy?"

If you are ultra-rich, turning up to an event in a private jet is all part of being in one the world's most exclusive clubs.

Owning a private jet is not only incredibly luxurious, it is amazingly practical in terms of time and security, especially if your work requires you to attend exclusive events around the world.

Every year, luxury estate agents Knight Frank and high net worth individual research firm Wealth-X release a massive report on everything the world's richest spend their money on, where they go, and what makes them tick.

In the report it also gives some fascinating insight into when and where the world's richest use their private jets and what events trigger these trips.

Davos Switzerland — The World Economic Forum brings together thousands of the most rich and powerful people in the world every January for a conference. So it is only natural that the alpine town is beset with private jets for the duration of the meeting.

The Superbowl, US — The incredibly popular NFL event in February has seen private jet traffic decline between 2012 and 2014. But some 50% of the existing traffic comes from non-US nationals looking to be there for the famous half-time show as well as the actual game.

The Masters Augusta, US — The golfing tournament is a go-to event for the wealthy in Georgia every April. The report says there has been an 18% rise in private jet traffic between 2012 to 2014.

Gulfstream G550

There are private jets, and then there are Gulfstreams.

In an opaque world filled with eight-figure price tags and anonymous clients, Gulfstream has managed to transcend the business-aviation industry and become a pop-culture icon.

Companies such as Bombardier, Embraer, and Cessna all build world-class business jets, but none have become engrained in pop culture quite like Gulfstream and its G-series jets. After all, no other business-jet company has been the subject of a pop song that hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to sample the Gulfstream experience when the airplane maker invited me and several other journalists to visit the company's headquarters in Savannah, Georgia. Our chariot for this trip was none other than a new Gulfstream G550, worth a cool $61.5 million. Business Insider provided financial compensation to Gulfstream for the trip.

Donald Trump Boeing 757

As Donald Trump's improbable campaign for the White House winds down, the controversial billionaire will jet to New York on Tuesday where he will await the results of this historic election. Unlike most presidential candidates, "The Donald" actually owns the Boeing 757-200 airliner-turned-private-jet that has deputized as his campaign plane.

"Trump Force One"— as some have dubbed the jet — has been one of the most visible symbols of his run for the Oval Office. Trump likes to call it the "T-Bird," according to a Discovery Channel documentary featuring the plane. According the documentary, Trump's Boeing 757 cost a whopping $100 million. Admittedly, that number seems a bit exaggerated when compared to market prices. The Republican presidential candidate has owned the Boeing airliner — registration N757FA— since 2011 and has customized the aircraft to his liking.

Over the years, Gulfstream's line of long-range private jets have become synonymous with the pinnacle of luxury air travel. Earlier this year, Business Insider had the opportunity to experience Gulfstream's former flagship, the $61.5 million G550, and it was simply incredible. The most popular route on a private jet is this £3,500 flight from London to Paris

$

Mustang_high res

LONDON — While you may assume the majority of private jet customers are celebrities and the super-rich, this isn't the case, according to new data.

The Private Jet Charter Trends Report from private jet charter PrivateFly shows that A-list celebrities and super-rich clients make up a minority of flyers, while most are successful business owners, families, or groups looking for a better travel experience.

The quarterly report also showed that from October to December 2016 the most enquired about route was London to Paris — a flight that can cost an average of £3,500 ($4,300) on board the most frequently flown jet, the small, four-seater "air taxi" style Cessna Citation Mustang.

London was also the most popular destination to fly to, followed by Paris and Zurich.

Adam Twidell, CEO of PrivateFly, said: "It goes without saying that today’s private jet customer is driven by the time-saving and convenience of private air travel which, while more expensive than airline travel, is not only for oligarchs, celebrities or the super-rich travelling in large and lavish jets.

"These high-spending clients exist of course, but they are a small minority. The critical mass of private jet users are successful business owners or families happy to pay a premium for a better travel experience. And with the entry-level end of the private jet market becoming increasingly competitive, this is likely to become even more apparent in 2017."

mustang_interiorThe report is based on customer bookings, enquiries, and flight searches through PrivateFly.

It showed that 57% of customers book their flight only one week — or less — before travelling, and revealed the demographic of the typical private jet customer: A 41-year-old male (71% of customers are male).

"There’s a lot of guesswork and many stereotypes surrounding who flies by private jet — many of which are overblown... Some of the findings may come as a surprise to those outside the industry, particularly the popularity of small jets and short distance flights," Twidell said. "Today there is a growing crossover between the profile of the private jet user and the airline passenger."

Gulfstream G550

LONDON — The use of private jets is gaining popularity among businesses as well as the super rich, as the numbers of the ultra wealthy swell across the world.

Much of the increase has been centred on Asia, where Hong Kong has seen a 535% increase in private jet fleet size in the past 10 years, according to Knight Frank's 2017 wealth report.

Taiwan, China and Macau have all seen a tripling of private jet ownership levels, but still have a way to go before they catch up with Latin America.

Four out of 10 of Latin America's ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UNHWIs) – people who are worth more than $30 million (£24 million) opt to fly privately "perhaps worried about the risk of kidnapping," Knight Frank, a luxury property consultancy, said. That compares with just under one in 10 for Asia.

The numbers of UHNWIs are forecast to grow 91% in Asia within 10 years and, in total, the number of ultra-wealthy people across the globe is expected to grow by 43% by 2026.

The top three countries for private jet fleet size are the US with 12,717, Mexico with 950 and Brazil with 786.

Airbus ACJ319 Infinito cabin pagani

On Monday, Airbus introduced the latest interior for its ACJ319neo private jet at the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition.

The new interior — called the Infinito — is a collaborate effort between Airbus Corporate Jets and supercar maker Automobili Pagani.

"In bringing together the best of the supercar and business jet worlds, we enable an elegant and seamless link for customers of both, while bringing a fresh approach to cabin design and satisfying very demanding standards," Airbus Corporate Jets Managing Director, Benoit Defforge, said in a statement.

The centerpiece of the Infinito interior is the innovative sky ceiling that displays a live view of the sky above the aircraft without the need for a massive glass roof. According to Airbus, the sky ceiling is meant to give the cabin a feeling of airiness and space.

Airbus ACJ319 Infinito cabin_Conference_and_DiningThe overall aesthetic feel of the cabin, which was shaped by Pagani's interior design team, mimics the feel of its multi-million dollar supercars. Leathers, woods, and carbon fiber live together in stylish harmony in the same way they do inside a Pagani Huayra.

The Infinito interior is split into multiple segments— including a cinema, a dining area, and a lounge —  that are separated by transparent dividers which can be made opaque at the touch of a button.

Pagani huayra finale+stelle+3Based on the next-generation Airbus A319neo, the ACJ319neo can fly eight passengers up nearly 7,800 miles or 15 hours non-stop.

The A319neo, which features updated aerodynamics and ultra-efficient turbofan engines, will specialize in flights into or out of airports with tough operating conditions such as high altitude, high heat, or short runways. The A319neo or new engine option flew for the first time in March.

The basic Airbus A319neo costs $99.5 million at list value excluding the cost of the Infinito interior.

The Airbus A380 superjumbo may be the next big thing in private jets, but the tiny Cirrus Vision Jet is the next game-changer.

At $1.96 million, the diminutive Cirrus is the most affordable private jet on sale today. In fact, it's about half the price of its nearest jet-powered competitor.

The Vision Jet has been 10 years in the making, Cirrus' vice president of marketing and communications, Ben Kowalski, told Business Insider. The production model of the Vision Jet made its first flight in May 2016. A few months later, the aircraft was certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. The company is now ramping up production and deliveries.
